ABOUT
INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE CREATION AND EXPERIENCE OF IMMERSIVE SOUNDSCAPES
Open Field Sound had its origins in Tremology Lab, a working partnership between myself and Kristin Miltner that began in 2023 with the goal of creating immersive sound art for science communication and public outreach.
Through previous work, Kristin and I had created soundscapes and immersive audio installations for SXSW, the National Geographic Museum, outdoor spaces, and break rooms in the Wellstar hospital chain. Regardless of the purpose of the installation — art, education, or health — in every situation we were struck by the moving effect that spatialized sound had on people.
The goal of Open Field Sound is to support that moving experience and make it more widespread by:
CREATING SOUNDSCAPES WITH PURPOSE
Science communication, environmental concerns, the natural world, health & wellness
PROVIDING ACCESS TO IMMERSIVE AUDIO TECHNOLOGY, AND COMPOSITIONAL ASSISTANCE
Working with creators in a space for experimentation and partnership, encouraging people from diverse content communities — scientists, educators, nature recordists, students, and artists — to use sound as a way to communicate ideas, affect people, and explore environments.
USING PORTABLE SYSTEMS
Developing portable immersive audio systems that make it possible to bring soundscape experiences into smaller, contemplative venues such as art galleries, classrooms, and community spaces. Allowing more people to experience spatial sound in everyday environments, supporting new forms of learning, engagement, and creative work.
