SOUND LAB & CLASSROOM

a collaboartive space for experimentation, education and partnership

Open Field Sound operates an exploratory sound lab and classroom in San Francisco State Univeristy’s Romberg Tiburon Center, looking out over San Francisco Bay.

This is our location for working with collaborators and developing immersive soundscapes, spatial composition techniques, and surround sound audio systems.

Equipment at the lab includes:

  • A 14-speaker digital surround-sound system that is a permanent fixture in the classroom

  • A portable 16-speaker wireless system mounted on a 10x10x10’ frame, suitable for events in art galleries, science museums, lobbies and classrooms

  • A 360-degree audio recorder for field recording

  • A variety of audio software and interactive tools for controlling immersive sound

  • Video projector and screen

We share this location and collaborative working arrangements with SF State’s Estuary and Ocean Science Center, the Smithsonian Estuary Research Center, and other marine research organizations.
